Pattern Breaking Stands Out
Oct 30, 2024Pattern breaking is the best way for salespeople to stand out.
The concept is simple...
Do the opposite of what everyone else is doing.
This works at every stage of the sales process:
1. Most people reach out pitching their product; instead reach out asking a question or educating on the problem
2. Most people focus their demo on pitching features; instead ask questions to understand what features are even worth pitching
3. Most people act like their product is perfect; instead admit to some downsides or areas where you hope it'll improve
The "sea of sameness" is a salesperson's worst enemy.
Yesterday I received a cold message from someone interested in a job.
He started by listing "reasons I'm not the best choice".
Of the hundreds of submissions I received, that one got our attention.
The subject line also included a quote from the hiring CEO that he found by listening to my podcast.
Most impressive part, he managed to make this all happen within the first hour of me announcing the role.
Be different.
Break patterns.
Stand out from the sea of sameness.
This doesn't mean be perfect, have perfect answers, say only perfect things.
It often means showing your human side.
Imperfection garners trust.
Trust garners sales.
Pattern breaking is not just about under-promising though, it's largely about doing what others aren't doing. Patterns are what our brains use to identify scenarios.
We answer a cold call and we seek patterns to identify if it's important or not, by breaking the patterns normal salespeople follow you limit your chances of immediately being placed into the wrong bucket and instead you stand out from the sea of sameness, earning you more time and attention.
Happy Selling,
